While Australia’s productivity debate continues, many small businesses are becoming more efficient.
According to Xero, small business labour productivity has reached its highest level since 2022.
The findings are based on data from approximately 154,000 Australian small businesses.
What’s driving the improvement?
Xero says productivity has remained above its long-term average for two consecutive quarters.
The strongest contributors appear to be:
- Greater use of technology.
- Better business processes.
- Smarter use of employee time.
- Investment in systems and equipment.
Importantly, productivity has been improving for around two years, suggesting a longer-term trend rather than a temporary improvement.
The payoff from working smarter
Businesses that become more productive often gain more flexibility.
That can mean improving margins, increasing capacity or creating room to invest in future growth.
Many of the biggest productivity gains come from investments that save time rather than simply cut costs.
